Neurons to nebulae, interference patterns on water, in sand, the clouds – our building blocks align. Physical strands collide and diverge much as cultural roots and mycelium networks do. All are connected. As a young artist exploring their diasporic roots, the crossing of cultures, and traveling routes of those who came before. The framework of our being is interdependent. Borrowing from Thich Naht Hahn we "inter-are." In my work, I explore diversity and connection, our struggles and challenges with nature, the juxtaposition of universality and intimacy within our “interbeing," further investigating our oneness. Confronting viewers with the inherent beauty and misgivings of change witnessed through the dynamic interplay of natural and abstracted visual elements. Hyper-attention to details, animacy, textures, and tones lay bare the pervasiveness of decay and renewal clearly seen from the veins in leaves to those beneath our skin. All inter-is, we inter-are. My work grapples with all that brings us together and pulls us apart in our dichotic, fractured world. Informed by all that is natural even while primarily surrounded by unnatural greyscapes, hazards of city life. We are informed by truths, though layer our stories atop them, muddying waters of collective understanding.
Neural networks to social networks, the fabric of our society and earth is an intricate tapestry woven repeatedly in the same motif. In my work I ask how do we overcome challenges to preserve our earth and each other? How do we better understand our roots and our collective routes moving forward? How do we cope with loss beyond personal levels — looking through the lenses of society and environment? How can we mend our world?
Originally from Toronto, Ontario; Canadian born global citizen Shae has lived in eight different countries on four continents with an anchor always firmly rooted in New York. Receiving a BA in Fine Arts with concentrations in Studio Arts and Creative Writing from Bard College — mentored by Judy Pfaff, Robert Kelly, and Larry Fink. Initially producing fine art works with a focus on installation and large scale paintings on various substrates — using mixed and experimental mediums in addition to encaustic topographical works, and a wide breadth of printmaking from highly technical photogravure to experimental monotypes. While life handed her quite a few challenging divergent paths she is grateful to resurface from these dark twisty rabbit holes emerging, dedicated to her work as an artist. Living in historic Greenwich Village with the ghosts of New York City's checkered creative past, one rebellious neuroscientist, and a small Velveteen dog, The SOC. They are now working with sculptural works, textile, immersive and experiential installations, sonic landscapes, ephemeral works, printmaking, drawing, and other two-dimensional mediums, to explore our role in the world and more specifically the relationship between the awareness of our oneness and antithetical feelings of intimacy/universality, healing/loss, epiphany/dread, accountability/apathy, and humanity/nature. With deep appreciation for the wealth of culture, community, and conversation densely offered on this tiny global island metropolis. A treasure trove of kindling fueling the ever burgeoning fires of a creative who receives every day as a gift with no guarantee for the next. Shae has spent significant periods of time in silent retreat practicing Vipassana meditation for several decades and is an avid lover of sailing, a pure experience of elements and the environment. Primarily inspired by our environment working with, natural, found, discarded, and upcycled objects for which NYC provides seemingly limitless possibilities from one street corner to the next. Shae has a deep affinity with and penchant for time spent steeped in nature and natural environments, paying attention to every little detail, a journey into the subtle.
